Yes, I was a bit skeptic at first, but I’m telling you, it is amazing.
I’m the first to admit that my hair isn’t always at its finest. I mean, come on. Most moms totally get this. And Texas water is….wow. Just wow. The hard water here has been really well, uh, hard on my hair. It’s getting better, so maybe my hair is adjusting. (I don’t even know if that’s possible.)
Anyway, despite my hair troubles, my daughters have beautiful, thick healthy hair. I wish they would actually keep it brushed and let me braid it or something, but… I will say they are doing better. Especially the littlest one. We brush her hair at least four times a day and it is always tangled. Always. But lately, she has been a little more agreeable to the brushing. :)
So, today I found this awesome thing on Pinterest about how to do your own French Manicure. I got myself a heck of a deal on some FREE nail polish at CVS not too long ago, so I was pretty jazzed. The tutorial said I would need those little circle stickers that you have to use when you rip the holes out of the side of your paper but still want to put the paper in a 3-ring binder. We had a ton of those…until Bizi used them to make a birthday card for Elie. So never mind that idea.
Next, I decided to make a lemon sugar scrub…until I realized that our measuring spoons and cups were in storage. Then, I was just like, seriously? But then Jose reminded me that we can get measuring spoons and cups for a dollar each. I wasn’t thrilled about spending money on something we already owned, no matter how far away they are, but measuring spoons and cups are kind of important. Especially in a family that likes to make everything themselves. So, we splurged and spent $2 on measuring spoons and cups. And made some lemon sugar scrub.
It’s super easy, but of course, I had lots of help. My friend Chris even came by to lend a hand.
First, we needed 2 1/2 cups of sugar. I scored a deal on sugar at CVS a week or two ago, so we have a lot of that right now. $3 for a 4-lb. tub. Not too bad. It’s not organic, but it scrubs.

Next, we mixed in a cup of olive oil. This happens to be organic extra virgin olive oil that we got at Costco. Yes, it was a deal, but I don’t remember exactly how much of a deal it was…

And finally, we added 4 tbsp. of freshly squeezed lemon juice. You could also substitute your choice of essential oils, but don’t use 4 tbsp. That’d be too much. You also want to be careful because some essential oils are stronger than others. We just went with lemon juice for today.
I put this in a jar, but that picture didn’t turn out so hot. You can put it in whatever you want. A 12 oz. glass jar works well. Leaves a little left over.
So, to recap, here’s the recipe:
2 1/2 c. sugar
1 c. olive oil
4 Tbsp. lemon juice
Mix well. (NOTE: the picture above is not thoroughly mixed. I forgot to take a thoroughly mixed picture… Sorry.) Scrub hands with mixture. Rinse. Wash hands with soap (because it’s oily). Put on a moisturizing cream, (preferably a homemade, natural one!). Enjoy your softy hands! :) I’m not sure if you should refrigerate the rest, as the olive oil may solidify. I’d try to use it within a week or two, just to be safe. Or at least keep an eye on it so the oil doesn’t get rancid.
