21) Make Waffles

Jose makes the yummiest waffles ever.  EVER.

His recipe (I think…he has it written on a paper plate and it’s not very easy to read…):

Mix together:

3 3/4 c. flour, sifted

6 Tbsp. sugar

6 Tbsp. baking powder

2 1/4 tsp. salt

After thoroughly mixed, make a well in the center and pour in:

1 tsp. vanilla

1/2 c. vegetable oil

3 c. milk

3 eggs

Mix well.  Pour in waffle maker.

Summer Bucket List 2012: Make Play-doh

16) Make Play-Doh

The days of summer are dwindling down.  The first day of Fall is Sept. 22 and we still have plenty of stuff on this list.

School has started for the kids and for me.  The kids started two days before I did and I greatly enjoyed being the teacher for those two days!  Things must be going pretty smoothly in my absence because everyday when I come home from the law school, all the kids’ work is done and they have all kinds of neat things to tell me about.  They had an art lesson the other day on drawing realistic eyes and they were amazing.  Yesterday, I was home by noon and was able to join in on their afternoon music lesson.  They are learning about Debussy and we listened to Afternoon of a Faun.  The music was so relaxing that I fell asleep.  Seriously.  Jose and the kids didn’t, but I was out like a light.

We are still trying to squeeze in our bucket list activities in where we can.  There’s no dance this week, so we have time after school.

We actually made this Play-doh last week, but my computer was being repaired so I couldn’t share it with you until now.

I got the recipe from Playdoughrecipe.org.  I had to change the amount of flour we used, but other than that, the recipe is the same.

Jello Playdough Recipe

from playdoughrecipe.org

1 1/2 c. plus 1/4 c. white flour

2 tbsp. salt

2 tbsp. cream of tartar

2 tbsp. cooking oil

1 c. warm water

1 3 oz. pkg. Jello

1. Mix all the ingredients together in a dutch oven or big sauce pan.  Stir until thoroughly combined.

2. Cook over low heat for approximately 20-30 minutes.  Keep stirring so the bottom doesn’t burn.

3. When it thickens into a big ball, remove from pan and allow to cool on a piece of wax paper.

4. Once cooled, begin to knead it.  You will most likely need to add additional flour at this point because this dough was very sticky for us.  So sticky that I knew I was going to find it everywhere…  A few handfuls at a time, I probably added about 1/4 cup of flour here.

5. Throw in glitter, if you have some on hand and so desire (we didn’t this time).

6. Have fun!

Treat Thursday: French Fry Sauce

Posted on

Treat Thursday started as an item on our Summer Bucket List.  But now, I’m thinking we might just make it a tradition.  It’s fun.  :)

Today, for Treat Thursday, we made French Fry Sauce from Recipe Punch.  And darn it, I wasn’t too thrilled.  Not because it was bad.  But because I’m just not big on mayo.  If you like mayo, check it out.  It really was good for people who like mayonnaise.  I think.  I guess I wouldn’t know what people who like mayonnaise think is good because I’m not one of them…

Anyway.  Here’s the recipe.  I suggest trying it with homemade French Fries.  We did and I think it helped.  :)

French Fry Sauce

by Recipe Punch

1/2 c. mayonnaisse

1/4 c. ketchup

1/4 tsp. vinegar

Mix together.  Dip fries.

Austin, Year 4, Day 17: Closet Makeover

Posted on

For Ysabel’s birthday, she wanted her closet redone.  So….we did the best we could.

First, we cleared it out.  Emptied it completely.

The very next thing we did was add another rod and shelf.  That was by far the most necessary step!  Yes, the rods are pink.  (That was my idea!)

I needed something to put their flip-flops in, but I couldn’t find what I wanted.  So I just got this little basket for a dollar from Dollar Tree and lined it with some scrapbook paper.  I must say for $1.25, it’s pretty cute.  And the plastic is pretty thick.  It’s not all flimsy like cheap storage is sometimes.

Then, we used some shelves from Home Depot along with some baskets and containers from Target to organize everything.  The girls felt that all the hangers should be pink, and I agreed.  :)

I know it looks a little empty, but a lot of their clothes are for colder weather so they are stored right now.  Also, I wanted to make sure to leave plenty of room for the numerous dance costumes that we are going to have for this year, so we are using a dresser for basics like socks, underwear, t-shirts, etc.

I think it turned out well, Ysabel is happy with it, and her bedroom is now much cleaner.  It was very inexpensive and didn’t take much time, so I say it was definitely worth it!

Austin, Year 4, Day 14: A Place to Stash the Mail

Posted on

Found the cutest idea on Pinterest.  I’d like to give credit to the blog it came from, but I can’t get to it.  I had to just make my own from the picture.  Of course, that’s good news for all of you because if I could make it without directions, ANYONE can!

It’s just a cereal box!  I cut the top the way you see in the picture and then covered it with scrapbook paper.  You can use whatever paper you have or you can download what I used HERE.  For the letters, you can use letter stickers or, again, download what I used HERE.  And a tip: when you buy scrapbook paper, don’t buy just one of each print unless you KNOW you are only going to use it for one scrapbook page.  I am always starting projects and then realizing in the middle that one page just isn’t going to cut it.  That’s why I had to download these.  I’m not sure what the cost difference is between buying the scrapbook paper at the store or the cost of the toner used to print the downloaded paper.  I’m probably overthinking this one.  Just do whatever works for you!

We hung ours on the refrigerator.  That way, when school starts next week, Jose has a place to put the mail until I get home and go through it.  (He’s under strict instruction to NEVER throw out anything until I look at it!)  Another little tip: Magnets from Dollar General aren’t going to hold this up.  Not even the clippy ones.  Yes, I tried.  I had four clips on this thing and it wouldn’t work.  It just kept sliding down.  Use a temporary adhesive or buy stronger magnet clips.  I used a temporary adhesive and it worked well.

I’d love to see how yours turns out!
